Sky Blues earn valuable three points in front of record league crowd...

29 April 2023

The Sky Blues went another step closer to securing play-offs with a 2-0 win against Birmingham City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Academy graduate Josh Eccles scored his first goal in Sky Blue colours to give City an early advantage.

City grabbed another at the end of the half when Viktor Gyökeres converted from the six-yard sport after Eccles won the initial penalty.

The second half was goalless, but enough for the Sky Blues, who wrapped up a crucial win in front of the record-breaking crowd.

City got off to the perfect start, taking the lead inside the first few minutes through Josh Eccles, who calmly slotted home from Viktor Gyökeres’ cut-back.

Kyle McFadzean went close moments later from a corner, before Gustavo Hamer was denied by Neil Etheridge, all inside the space of the opening ten minutes.

Gyökeres stormed down the wing, once again, and opted to go himself but a last-ditch tackle prevented the his from testing Blues’ keeper.

The Swede got his goal not long after, giving the Sky Blues a two-goal cushion. Eccles breached the opposition box, drawing a penalty for a handball, to which Gyökeres stepped up and dispatched into the bottom right corner.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 2-0 Birmingham City

Gyökeres nearly netted City’s third of the game as he spun his man on the half-way line and charged toward goal, but his effort sailed just wide of the mark.

Godden produce an equally impressive turn on the next attack, rolling the ball through his legs and teeing up his strike partner but the offside flag ruled out Gyökeres' strike.

Jake Bidwell joined in on the action late in the half, forcing a smart save out of Etheridge with a curling effort from outside the box.

Action was minimal in the second forty-five, but City perfromed well to see out the win and secure their 20th clean sheet of the season.
