PUSB: 'From The Board' versus Watford

11 April 2023

After each matchday programme this season, we publish the regular column from the Coventry City board on our website. You can read Coventry City Chief Executive Dave Boddy's column from our game against Watford below:

Good afternoon and welcome to the Coventry Building Society Arena as we host Watford in today’s Sky Bet Championship match.

I would also like to extend that welcome to the players, staff, officials and supporters who join us this afternoon from Watford.

Our last game here was the Legends Day, which is always a special occasion. To see so many of our former players back together at the Club was fantastic and the reception that you gave to them at half-time was special and also emotional for those involved. I was able to speak to a number of the former players and it is great to hear their memories of their careers and also the special place that Coventry City, and its supporters, continues to hold for them.

700 people were dining in the matchday restaurant for the match, which is a record, and I would like to thank the staff at the Football Club who organised the day and the team at the Arena too. I would also like to thank the Former Players Association, who we arrange the day in partnership with and whose volunteers and the work they put in before and on the day are integral to the day’s success.

The atmosphere in the lounge before the game was excellent as supporters were able to mingle with their heroes and we had a wide range of interviews with the former players. We also caught up with four of the former players for our website and social media, and fans can watch the interviews with Tommy Hutchison, Noel Whelan, Gary McSheffrey and Max Biamou online now.

Just two days later, we held another fantastic event at the Coventry Building Society Arena when we invited our 2022/23 Junior Sky Blues to come along on the first day of the Easter holidays and watch the Sky Blues squad training, and incorporated our players sponsors day.

It was a brilliant day and an event that we have not done before. As a replacement for the JSB Party, it proved extremely popular with our Junior Sky Blues and we hope that it can become a staple of the CCFC calendar for years to come.

Through the morning we had Sky Blue Sam, the Easter Bunny, a Family Zone, face painters, balloon artists, inflatables, Sky Blues in the Community activities and lots of competitions and giveaways, and the concourse was full of happy and excited young supporters – as well as some equally excited adults too!

After training, the players spent a long time with supporters along the front of the West Stand doing selfies and signing autographs. There was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the morning and everyone involved enjoyed the event.

This Wednesday night we have another game here at the Arena when our Under 21s will face Alvechurch in the Birmingham Senior Cup Semi Final. The players deserve a huge amount of credit for getting us to this stage, coming up against a number of good non-league men’s sides along the way. At the same time, we are also seeing a number of impressive Under 21s performances in the league too, from what is a very young Under 21s group. I’d also like to praise Under 21s Head Coach John Dempster, Assistant Chris Allen and all of the Academy staff involved too. I hope to see many Sky Blues supporters here backing the team and hopefully cheering us on to our first Senior Cup Final for many years.

Thanks for your support, enjoy the game. PUSB
