PUSB: 'From The Board' versus Reading

23 April 2023

After each matchday programme this season, we publish the regular column from the Coventry City board on our website. You can read Coventry City Chief Executive Dave Boddy's column from our game against Reading below:

Good afternoon and welcome to the Coventry Building Society Arena for today’s game as we host Reading in the Sky Bet Championship.

I would also like to welcome the players, staff, officials and supporters from Reading who join us at the Arena this afternoon.

Last week we announced our End of Season Awards Evening, which will be held in the Premier Lounge at the Arena on Sunday 30th April. It is always a very enjoyable night and I’m sure it will be again, as we reflect on some of highlights of the campaign and hand out the season’s awards, with the Sky Blues squad and staff in attendance. After just over 48 hours the event had sold-out, which is fantastic to see and is testament to how the season itself has been enjoyed by our supporters.

We also recently held our second Supporters Forum of the season. The Forum brings together all of the different Supporters Groups and other sections of fans to discuss a range of different issues with the Club. On this occasion, new Owner and Executive Chairman Doug King was in attendance and spoke to the fans about his plans for the Club. Minutes from the meeting can be seen on our website, with topics across the Club being covered.

One of those was away tickets and in particular the points scheme that we brought in at the start of this season. It has been a great success, bringing a much fairer method for fans to access these tickets. The new system has meant that those fans who travel to away games week-in, week-out get priority for away tickets, with a tiered approach to access based on points and altered based on allocation and expected demand.

As part of our gesture to Season Ticket holders affected by the pitch postponements at the start of this season, fans will be allocated additional points for this campaign as well as receiving a £5 club retail voucher. The postponements were due to the unsafe playing surface at the Coventry Building Society Arena at the time, caused by the Commonwealth Games rugby and a new pitch which was promised by the Arena’s then owner Wasps not being laid.

It is important that we provide this gesture to those Season Ticket holders who were affected, acknowledging the disruption that was caused to our fans by circumstances outside of their control and of the Club’s. Thankfully things have improved significantly since then, but it was a very difficult start to the season for everyone concerned.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our Under 21s for reaching the Birmingham Senior Cup Final after beating Alvechurch here at the Arena last week.  I’d also like to praise Under 21s Head Coach John Dempster, Assistant Chris Allen and all of the Academy staff for their efforts too. It was a great game to watch and a much-deserved win for the Under 21s against a well-regarded men’s side. The win secured our place in the Senior Cup Final for the first time since 2007 and is coupled with the Under 21s really growing into their season and putting together an impressive run of results to now be 4th in the table, and with a shout of taking part in the end of season play-offs in the Professional Development League. They will face Stourbridge in the Senior Cup Final – details for the tie are to be confirmed, but hopefully we will have lots of Sky Blues fans in attendance.

Thank you for your continued support – enjoy the game. PUSB
