NEWS: Viktor Gyökeres wins March Player of the Month

7 April 2023

Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for March!

It was three goals and three assists in four games for the Swede, despite attracting ever more defenders to him. He remains too quick and smart for them, with a mazy run for an assist at Hull and a delightfully-dinked finish at Huddersfield.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins said: “We’re very pleased that Viktor has won the Player of the Month award.

“We enjoyed an excellent March as we went unbeaten during the month, with Viktor scoring three goals and providing three assists alongside his all-round contribution to the team.

“We’re delighted to see that recognised and congratulate Viktor on his award.”

Gyokeres said: "I am delighted to have won the Player of the Month award for March.

"It was a great month for the team to go unbeaten throughout March, and for me personally to score three goals and assist three too.

"All of my teammates and the staff at the Club have helped me to win this award and I thank them for that, and also thank the supporters who help drive me and team on week-in, week-out."

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “One of the outstanding players in the Championship this season, Gyokeres is a striker who now ticks all the boxes and would improve just about any team he played in.

“If Coventry reach their goal of finishing in the top six, it would be in a large part thanks to the Swede and his performances in March.”

Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Coventry were unbeaten in March with two wins and two draws from their four games.

“This saw the Sky Blues close the gap on the top six to just three points and become an 11/4 chance to make the Play-Offs, going into the last international break of the season.

“Unsurprisingly, Gyokeres was once again crucial for his side, scoring another three goals to take his tally to 18 league goals this season.

“Only Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom has scored more and, although he looks home and hosed for the top scorer award with 25 goals and a price of 1/50, nothing should be taken away from Gyokeres’ efforts this season and he should return each-way money for anyone that backed him at around 33/1 before a ball was kicked.

“He’s currently a 12/1 chance with us to nick the Golden Boot but, regardless of that outcome, Coventry and Gyokeres have had excellent seasons, punching above their weight.”
