INTERVIEW: Mark Robins reflects on Birmingham win

29 April 2023

Mark Robins shared his thoughts following Coventry’s 2-0 win over rivals Birmingham at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues stormed into the lead when Josh Eccles scored his first City goal with just three minutes on the clock.

Viktor Gyokeres then converted from the spot to double City’s advantage and wrap up the points for the Sky Blues.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins looked back on the performance and gave his assessment on proceedings.

Reflecting on the performance…

“Right from minute one. It helps when you grab an early goal. It was a really good move, Josh did really well to get into the box and side foot it into the net.

“The crowd was noisy, really loud today so it was good to get our noses in front. They are a difficult side to play against, obviously they got some good players and good players on the bench who can change the game.

“We took charge of the game right from the first minute, through the whole game and I thought we were on top. They had bits of moments but we defended the set pieces and the long throws. I do not know why they stopped using the long throws, maybe there was an injury to Roberts, I do not know.

“To win it is great. The local derby, the first time we have beaten them here as well. I think we drew here last year which was disappointing at the time. There was a lot of really good football today and we have come away on the end of a really good performance and result.

“There was no fear today. There was no special mentions. They are not stupid. We did not prepare differently, the lads just got on with it because they know what they can do. We spoke about the performance and the three points.”

City’s performance…

“Another good day’s work and another clean sheet. There was so many good performances.

“I thought Gus was excellent again. Viktor was a handful all afternoon even when he got a knock on his ankle and hopefully, we can settle that down.

“Matty Godden worked again selflessly and tirelessly, I thought he did really well. The two were unlucky to not get a goal or two more. I thought them two and Josh Eccles, Gus and Liam Kelly behind them, were all fantastic going forward. The perfect overall performance.

“Kelly got a cut on his head so it needed bandaging up. It was just a brilliant day really, not that he has a cut on his head obviously! The fact we have done what we have done.

“Brooke did very well I thought, Bidwell as well on the other side. They looked comfortable, the whole back five dealt with everything, marshalled everything that they threw at us. Jutkiewicz is a real handful and he has been up on confidence recently, he has played some games and scored a couple as well.”

The penalty awarded…

“There is not a designated penalty taker. I let them go with whatever if they are feeling confident. I do not go in and designate someone. Obviously Matty has been exceptional for us, Vik a little hit and miss but he fancied it and he took it.

“I am certainly not going to get involved on the touchline because I think it puts added pressure on the taker. They sorted it out, at the end of the day he scored so I do not really care!

“They are teammates, we are a team and we need to be that. You saw the selfless running today. After that we saw Matty Godden’s unbelievable bit of skill on the halfway line to spin away from the defender. It reminded me for all the world of Dean Saunders when he was in his prime. He let the ball go through his legs and plays a first-time pass for Vik.

“Matty is a real team player and so is Viktor. You can see that, he is so energetic and powerful, that is what makes him special.

“We wanted them closer together because when they are too far apart there is no connection. We need that connection to link the midfield, which is what Gus has been fantastic at. Josh Eccles as well today, he did it so well. They worked together well, and whoever fancies a penalty they can take it, but if somebody snatches it off somebody, then they have to get the ball in the net.”

The Sky Blue Army…

“It was fantastic, you can kind of acquaint that to the noise at Wembley stadium, that day was loud but today was really loud! It was phenomenal and it helped all of us. Luckily, we produced a decent game too.

“The fact they stayed at the end to applaud the players, it was outstanding. We have been able to say thanks for the support of the season, hopefully we can see them all again next week away at Boro.

“Hopefully like I have said, we can extend our home season.”

Next week versus Middlesbrough…

“We could not go to a more difficult place next week. Middlesborough is tough place to go, no matter how they play.

“Who knows, we might end up playing them again twice after. But the chance would be brilliant.”
