INTERVIEW: Mark Robins Reading reaction

City move to 5th in the Championship...

22 April 2023

City boss Mark Robins was delighted with his side, as they picked up all three points against Reading at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Goals from Matty Godden and Gustavo Hamer secured the points, as City backed up a point on the road at Blackburn with three points against the Royals.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins gave his thoughts on the games proceedings, praising his sides performance, as they move to 5th in the Championship.

Robins also provided an update on the latest fitness of midfielder Ben Sheaf, after receiving the results of his scan on Friday afternoon…

Reflecting on the game…

“When you look at what happened midweek (versus Blackburn), the players did not get back to Coventry till three in the morning, some did not get home till four, half four in the morning.

“I was worried going into today. I needed to make some changes and we played some really good football. We missed a few chances and created a load of them. We managed again to get the first goal which is always important.

“But then we started to look a bit leggy, then we made daft mistakes whether that is mental tiredness or physical tiredness it results in errors. We gave them the goal, it was a really poor one to give away. On days like this it is all about finding a way and getting the result at whatever the cost really.

“They threw everything at us and we became sloppy. There was a lot of lofted balls into our box so we had to fight them off. They brought on Shane Long who is an experienced striker and offers them something different.

“But we got back on top and created some other good chances. Gus made the first one and scored the second one with a brilliant finish following a ricochet from someone’s foot.”

On Viktor Gyokeres’ treatment…

“I don’t know how Viktor did not score, he is getting absolutely nothing from referees now, I do not know what they are seeing, I really do not! Pulling his shirt, hitting him from behind, making it very difficult for him. There are blatant fouls and yet he gets nothing.

“It is because teams are scared to death of him. I do not know how he has not scored at least a hattrick today. For him, it was a tiring performance, but he needs to make his mind up and do things sometimes. He was just unlucky with his final touch today.

“He is a bit disappointed today because he hasn’t added to his tally with the chances he has had. But still he is there to score them and he is there to miss them.”

Securing the three points…

“So, we have ended up seeing it through. Difficult that, eight minutes added on.

“Sometimes I do not see where those eight minutes come from but regardless, we came through.

“You look at the scoreline at the end and you are in fifth position in the league, we might have peaked too early!”

The Sky Blue Army…

“They were brilliant even when we conceded. And we needed it because of the circumstances. The other night they were brilliant, they obviously had the same journey as us to Blackburn and we needed them.

“They give us the added ingredient that gives us the energy when we are tired.

“It is good for a few members of the team because some of them have not experienced anything like this before. Josh Eccles springs to mind, he is playing games on the bounce now and today was a great performance.”

Liam Kelly’s first start of the season

“He was brilliant when he came on the other night and he has not let us down here today.

“Kells has been with us through thick and thin, when we were in League Two. He is the one left that has experienced all that. The supporters are getting behind that too, because we have got a Doyle and a Kelly back again! I noticed that song today which was nice to hear.

“He has done really well, even when he still moves into areas of the pitch when he doesn’t need to. I am not being critical because we have seen it through and it was deserved.”

On Sheaf…

“He has a tear in his calf. Four weeks probably but that is the usual figure.”
