INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on QPR performance and Viktor Gyökeres' 20th league goal of the season

Sky Blues leave London with all three points...

15 April 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins gave his verdict as Viktor Gyökeres' recorded his 20th league goal of the season to help his side to a 3-0 win against QPR.

Viktor Gyökeres tallied his 19th and 20th goals of the league campaign as Gustavo Hamer added another to wrap up the three points.

Talking to the press after the game, Robins gave his assessment:

On the performance versus QPR...

“I think we started off well, played some good football and got in control really early in the game.

“We started to put them under some pressure and kept their crowd quiet which was really good and then we got our noses in front.

“After the first goal we started to get sloppy and gave them the impetus, they’re not a poor team by any stretch of the imagination but when you start to lose confidence it gets very difficult.

“I feel for Gareth [Ainsworth] a little bit, he’s come into this situation, he loves this club and he’s trying his best to turn things around and they’ve changed the way they do the job but they’ve still got really good players and I’m sure they’ll turn things around.

“We gave them too many chances to put the ball in the box with quality and we gave stupid, cheap fouls away and they were going down so they could put the pressure on us in the box, thankfully we defended them pretty well.

“The performance was outstanding and to finish the job off like that was fantastic, so we need to recover well and prepare for Wednesday."

On the impact of the substitutes…

“We made some changes to freshen things up because we needed to get the second goal and if we waited too much longer they were going to get back in it.

“I think the changes made a significant impact, so I’m really pleased with the way they settled into it with Fanky [Dabo], Josh [Wilson-Esbrand] and Tyler [Walker].

“Tyler was unlucky to not get a goal, as the balls comes across Viktor has played it just behind him and he slipped but he keeps his head and gets to his feet and slides it for Gus for the third goal."

On Viktor Gyökeres hitting the 20 goal mark…

“We scored a really good goal, got Viktor [Gyökeres] in down the side and he took it as he usually does, so 19 for the season and we said at the start of the day to get 20 and he’s come up trumps.

“The second goal for Viktor he’s run away from them and finds the back of the net to get him to 20 which is a brilliant achievement.

“Fantastic achievement for him and I’m trying to keep him hungry for more because now he’s got the 20 goals which hasn’t happened here in the Championship for a long time, so congratulations to him.”

On Gustavo Hamer’s performance…

“I think he’s been brilliant for about six weeks, or so, he’s been outstanding.

“Last week he turned the game in our favour against Watford, we dragged ourselves back from a two-goal deficit and, today, he showed a desire and intelligence and he’s getting some success from that by scoring and assisting with some goals.

“With four games to go we’re in a really nice position with no pressure.”

On the upcoming Blackburn clash…

“We’ve got a tough one coming up, we’ve got to go away to Blackburn, so it’s important we recover well, we’ll enjoy this first and get onto that on Monday.

“It’s going to be a tough week but a really important week and it keeps things moving along nicely for us.

“If we can get something from the game, it sets things up really nicely but there’s a lot of clubs that are closing in and that’s been the case all season.

“It’s a really good opportunity, so we can’t throw things away and make sure we’re right on things Wednesday but we can’t look any further than that.”
