INTERVIEW: John Dempsters gives his Alvechurch reaction as City progress to the final

12 April 2023

Sky Blues Under-21s Head Coach, John Dempster, told how he was proud of his side, after they made it to the Birmingham Senior Cup final.

City came past Alvechurch at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with goals from Tristen Batanwi, Justin Obikwu and Danny Cashman.

The victory sets up a final with Stourbridge, as City look to claim some silverware for the second season in a row.

Speaking after the final whistle, Dempster gave his immediate thoughts on proceedings…

Reflecting on the performance…

“I thought it was a brilliant game, two teams going at it, I thought we had the better of the game, but they made it difficult for us towards the end. There were long throws coming into the box, lots of corners, free kicks and the players dealt with the majority of them well and it was good to see.

“When they scored the first goal the pressure was on, and they had the momentum and then they got the penalty and then we’re hanging on at the end to be honest.

“The overall performance was fantastic with some really good individual performances and it’s great to be in the final.”

Tristen Batanwi having a hand in all the goals…

“I thought he was man of the match. For an under-17s player to perform like that against a men’s team was unbelievable really.

“He’s been exceptional all season and he’s a real character off the pitch and he takes that onto the pitch.

“To be involved in all three goals sums his night up and like I said, I thought he was man of the match.”

Scoring twice in the first five minutes of the second half…

“We came out of the traps, and we wanted to put their centre-halves under pressure and be on the front-foot.

“We went high and had a couple of attacks and that paid off for us because we scored from two of them and we probably could have done better with a few more.

“But like I said, we want the players to get tested and see if they have resilience and they showed that in abundance.”

Eyes on the final…

“The staff were getting excited towards the end and the crowd were vocal and it added to a good atmosphere and spectacle.

“Full credit to Alvechurch because they put us under pressure in the last 20 minutes and fortunately, we stepped up to it and we’re in the final.

“The job isn’t done yet, we want to win the final now. We’re pleased with the players’ effort and proud with them.”
