CLASSICS: Blackburn Rovers 1-4 Sky Blues

Relive a memorable triumph over Wednesday night's opponents...

18 April 2023

On 5 January 2008, the Sky Blue registered a memorable FA Cup triumph over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, thanks to goals from Michael Mifsud, Elliot Ward and Dele Adebola.

City arrived in Lancashire to take on a then-Premier League side boasting international stars such as David Bentley, Chris Samba and Brad Friedel.

The afternoon started in ideal, yet fortune, fashion with a goal-bound Mifsud effort taking a deflection and looping over Friedel to hand Coventry the lead.

From there, the Sky Blues grew in confidence and were awarded a penalty on the hour mark for a clear foul on Mifsud, converted by defender Ward.

Adebola's goal was the pick of the bunch, fired home on 83 minutes after a twisting run that saw him charge from inside his own half and into the Rovers penalty area to score.

Blackburn showed glimpses of a fightback on 85 minutes when David Bentley pulled on back - but Mifsud made sure of the win in stoppage time.

Sky Blues XI on that day: Konstantopoulos, Osbourne, Ward, Turner, Borrowdale, Mifsud, Doyle, Michael Hughes, Tabb, Adebola, Best.

Subs not used: De Zeeuw, Kyle, Simpson, Gray, Thornton.

Booked: Doyle.

Goals: Mifsud 34, Ward 64 (pen), Adebola 83, Mifsud 90.
