ACADEMY: Sky Blues U18s cap off brilliant Easter period with win over Sheffield United

The young Sky Blues took on Burnley and Sheffield United over a busy Easter weekend...

11 April 2023

Sky Blues coach Gary Mills has described his Under-18s group as "outstanding" after picking up impressive results against Sheffield United and Burnley over the Easter period.

The young Sky Blues started their Easter weekend with a 2-2 draw against Burnley, with both goals coming through sensational free kicks scored by Elliot Betjemann, before beating Sheffield United in Yorkshire, thanks to goals from Aiden Dausch and Charlie Finney.

Mills highlighted a number of stand-out stars from the back-to-back fixtures, putting praise on the likes of Ricardo Di Troio and Dan Rachel, as well as Dausch, Finney and Betjemann.

Speaking after City's win away at Sheffield United, Mills pointed to the hard work put in on the training pitch and described their results as the reward for that effort.

On the Easter period, with a draw away at Burnley and a win at Sheffield United:

"The lads have been outstanding over this Easter period. The effort they have put in, and the detail we have gone into over the last few weeks, has been phenomenal and these impressive results are their reward for it, both the more than experienced and the younger lads.

"For some, the workload is really tough at the moment as they’re playing Under-18s and Under-21s football, so there are lots of games. It’s really good to see how they cope with playing at both levels and in games so close to each other. Physically, it’s been really good for them and the players need to take huge credit for that."

On Elliot Betjemann's free-kick double against Burnley:

"Technically, Betch is fantastic and the lads really trust him. They give him the ball and he can dominate games. His two free-kick goals against Burnley were outstanding.

"It was a tough game against Burnley because they had the lion's share of possession, and they looked the most dangerous, but Betch’s magic helped us to get a draw."

On the win over Sheffield United, with goals from Aiden Dausch and Charlie Finney:

"We went into the game with a low block. We’d worked on it leading into the period. Sheffield United had the majority of possession but they had the ball where we wanted them to have it. We had moments where we pressed them and it worked really well.

"We took the lead through Dausch, with a good ball from Bradley Stretton. The hosts then equalised through a penalty and saw another penalty saved by Dan Rachel, who has been brilliant lately. He’s in a really good place.

"But then we found the winner with about 15 minutes to go thanks to a goal from Charlie Finney, who was also outstanding. He works tirelessly and he is tactically really good."

On the group as a whole after the Easter break:

"They’re all in a really good place at the moment and it’s great that they’re getting the rewards. The foundation for that is the hard work that they are putting in and it's brilliant to see."
