PREVIEW: Sky Blues U21s host Barnsley

The young Sky Blues take on Barnsley U21 at The Alan Higgs Centre...

30 September 2022

The Sky Blues U21s welcome Barnsley to The Alan Higgs Centre on Friday (1pm). Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the fixture...

The story so far:

The young Sky Blues currently sit sixth in the Northern Section of the Professional Development League, after six rounds of the new season.

John Dempster's side have picked up six points from their opening six games but have fallen to back-to-back defeats in recent weeks.

The youngsters will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat at St Andrew's on Monday, as they take on Barnsley for the second part of their first double-game-week of the campaign.

Our last six results:

  • Birmingham City 3-0 Sky Blues
  • Sky Blues 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday
  • Crewe Alexandra 0-2 Sky Blues
  • Sky Blues 2-3 Millwall
  • Charlton Athletic 2-1 Sky Blues
  • Sky Blues 3-0 Reading

Barnsley's results so far:

  • Barnsley 1-1 Peterborough
  • Barnsley 2-0 Charlton
  • Barnsley 2-2 Ipswich Town
  • Millwall 4-0 Barnsley
  • Barnsley 2-3 Bristol City

Manager's thoughts:

“It's a good thing that the next game comes quickly," said Sky Blues U21 boss John Dempster, following defeat at Birmingham.

“It'll be a different challenge, but it'll be tough, and it always is against Barnsley. I know a lot of their backroom staff very well. They'll be performing well.

“It'll be another tough game but it's brilliant for the lads to have an opportunity to respond and I'm sure we will.”

Player's thoughts:

“The games come thick and fast and that gives us a chance to put things right," said City defender Blaine Rowe.

"Hopefully, I can get another 45 minutes in the tank after returning from injury against Birmingham City on Monday.

“I will keep pushing on. I want to keep playing now because I feel ready to play, and I feel great to be honest.”

Matchday information:

Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm with both admission and parking free at The Alan Higgs Centre on a first come, first serve basis.
