We take a look back at a classic meeting between the Sky Blues and their upcoming opponents Middlesbrough...
On 11 September 2021, the Sky Blues secured their fourth victory of the season after beating Middlesbrough 2-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The goals came from Viktor Gyökeres and Martyn Waghorn, both late in the game following a closely-fought contest in the West Midlands.
After a period of Middlesbrough pressure resulted in a fine triple-save from Simon Moore, the Sky Blues began to take control of the encouter. Jamie Allen then latched onto a loose ball and picked out the run of Gyökeres, charging down on goal, leaving the Swede to round Lumley and slot the ball away to give City the lead.
The visitors searched for an equaliser and nearly found one when Matt Crooks’ glancing header clipped the crossbar, going over for a goal-kick.
But Martyn Waghorn doubled the lead and secured the win in stoppage time, with a weak-foot finish.
