UNDER-21S: Sky Blues 1-3 Burnley

Defeat for City at the Alan Higgs...

18 October 2022

The Sky Blues Under-21s slipped to defeat to Burnley in the Professional Development League.

A hat-trick from Dara Costelloe condemned John Dempster’s side to defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre.

Liam Kelly had pulled one back for the Sky Blues with a fine strike from the edge of the area, but City were unable to build on the captain’s strike.

City fell behind after just five minutes on the clock and it came after a ball over the top released Dara Costelloe and he lifted the ball over Tom Billson and into the back of the net.

Seb Thompson worked his way into the area a few minutes later, but this time, under pressure from Blaine Rowe, Thompson’s shot was well saved by Billson.

The City ‘keeper got down low to his right from the resulting corner, denying Thompson’s shot from the edge of the area.

Costelloe found himself in space following another ball over the top and he looked to replicate his opening strike, but this time his lift over Billson went wide.

City thought they had an equaliser and it came down the left when Callum O’Hare played the ball out wide to Jack Burroughs and his cross was a superb one for Harrison Nee, but on the stretch, his shot went over the bar.

Dempster’s side were starting to grow into the game and were pushing for that leveller, going close when Ryan Howley forced Denis Francis into a superb stop, just at the half-way stage of the first half.

However, on the half-hour mark, Burnley were awarded a penalty after Jay McGrath was adjudged to have brought down Costelloe.

The striker stepped-up to take the penalty and sent Billson the wrong way to get his and the Clarets second of the game.

City responded well to Burnley’s second and they pulled one back of their own when Liam Kelly played a one-two with Ryan Howley and then curled the ball past Francis from the edge of the area to make it 2-1.

Moments before the break, Burnley hit the woodwork when Joe Bauress saw his shot from distance hit the post.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-2 Burnley

Marco Rus replaced Callum O’Hare at half-time and he was involved in City’s opening chance, teeing up Jack Burroughs from range, but his shot went narrowly wide.

City continued to mount the pressure on the Burnley defence, as they looked to create an opening to find an equaliser.

Despite their efforts, City were dealt a blow when the visitors were awarded another penalty and it would be the same result as Costelloe completed his hat-trick.

Billson produced a good stop ten minutes from time, getting down well to deny Tucker’s strike from range.

City ultimately fell to defeat to the Clarets at the Alan Higgs Centre in the Professional Development League.
