The Sky Blues make it back-to-back wins...

19 October 2022

Martyn Waghorn’s penalty five minutes from time gave the Sky Blues all three points against Sheffield United at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

In a tight game, it was Waghorn’s penalty which proved the difference, as the striker fired the ball past Davies from the spot.

The win gives City back-to-back wins and moves Mark Robins’ side off the bottom of the Championship.

There was nothing to split the two sides in the opening exchanges of the first half, with the Sky Blues and the Blades battling for possession, as they looked to create an opening.

Matty Godden, who picked up a knock early on, was able to shake that off and had a shot from distance, which he couldn’t steer on target.

There was controversy a few minutes later when Fankaty Dabo was brought down by a challenge from James McAtee, but the referee awarded a yellow card.

At the other end, the visitors had a shot from range for themselves, but it was the same outcome as Godden’s as it went over the bar.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Sheffield United

City looked bright at the start of the second half, creating an opening with Jake Bidwell teeing up Josh Eccles, but his shot was well blocked.

However, it would be the visitors who would come the closest to opening the scoring when Oliver Norwood’s free-kick from the left-hand-side came back off the crossbar.

Gustavo Hamer was introduced just before the hour mark and he forced Adam Davies into a fine stop after bursting into the box and getting shot away from a tight angle.

The Blades would hit the woodwork again ten minutes from time as Oli McBurnie watched on as his strike from the edge of the area cannoned back off the post.

Hamer was looking lively from range, and he looked for goal again as time wore on, but his shot flew over the bar.

There was drama in the last five minutes when Viktor Gyokeres was brought down in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Martyn Waghorn, who came on after the hour mark, stepped-up and fired the ball past Davies to give City the lead.

The striker almost helped produce a second after his corner was flicked on by Kasey Palmer, but the midfielder’s header went wide of goal.
