REPORT: Sky Blues 2-2 Rotherham United

City scored late to earn a point at the Coventry Building Society Arena...

25 October 2022

The Sky Blues have been held to a 2-2 draw by Rotherham United at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

City twice fought from behind, through goals from Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres, but were unable to find a late winner in a game dominated by Mark Robins' side.

The game started on a sorry note for the Sky Blues, when striker Martyn Waghorn was forced to withdraw after picking up an injury. He was replaced by Kasey Palmer, as City reverted to a four-man midfield.

From there, City took their time to gradually grow into the game, with their intensity increasing as the first half progressed.

Callum Doyle was lending his hand to the best of Coventry's attacks and saw one goal-bound shot stopped by Millers goalkeeper Viktor Johansson. Viktor Gyokeres also had chances to score, but was often crowded out before he could get his shot away.

The best chance of the opening 45 fell to stand-in Sky Blues captain Kyle McFadzean, who saw a delicate placed Fankaty Dabo cross land on his head, but we was unable to keep his header below the crossbar.

City were punished for missing their list of chances right before the break, when Bramall fired past Ben Wilson to open Rotherham's lead, right on the stroke of half-time.

Coventry's persistence continue after half-time with Kasey Palmer and Jamie Allen both having golden chances to level the game. Time and time again, their shots were blocked by Millers defenders.

With 15 minutes to go, City made a triple change that paid off for Mark Robins. Callum O'Hare, Jonathan Panzo and Todd Kane were all introduced - and within second Hamer found the leveller and he fired in from close range.

Coventry's lead did not last long, however, with Washington striking a dagger into Sky Blue hearts on the 80th minute. The striker got goal-side of Robins' defence and placed his effort beyond Wilson.

But in stoppage time the Sky Blues found yet another late goal at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and once again through Gyokeres, who stood up to convert a pently, won by O'Hare, with ease.
