The Sky Blues Under-21s slipped to defeat to Sheffield United at the Alan Higgs Centre in Professional Development League action.
City fell behind midway through the first half after Sydie Peck scored from the spot and that lead was doubled five minutes after the restart when Owen Hampson curled the ball in from inside of the area.
Despite forcing Adam Davies into some good stops the Sky Blues were unable to get back into the game and conceded a third late on through Theo Williams.
City had their first opening of the game when Will Bapaga was brought down on the edge of the area and Gustavo Hamer stepped-up to take the set-piece, but his effort was well saved by Adam Davies.
Bapaga was involved again 15 minutes later, playing a splendid ball through for Tom Costello, but the striker’s shot was deflected wide of goal.
The Blades were restricted with their openings after half hour, with their only chance coming from Jili Buyabu, who sent his shot over the bar from the edge of the area.
However, despite a lack of chances, United were awarded a penalty when Blaine Rowe adjudged to have brought down his opponent in the area.
The Blades captain stepped-up to take the spot-kick and Sydie Peck found the bottom left corner to give the visitors the lead.
HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-1 Sheffield United
After the restart, Sheffield United almost doubled their lead, but Peck couldn’t steer his shot from close range on target, as he fired over the bar from inside of the area.
The Blades would double their lead five minutes into the second half and it was a fine finish from Owen Hampson, who cut inside and curled the ball into the top corner.
Simon Moore produced a fine save just after the hour mark, getting down well to his right to deny Theo Williams’ strike from 20 yards out.
At the other end, Hamer had a chance at another set-piece, but again, Adam Davies was able to make the save to deny the Brazilian.
The Sky Blues almost pulled one back when Harrison Nee had a shot blocked, before feeding the ball out wide for Josh Reid and his cross was met by the head of Ryan Howley, but Davies made the save in the United goal.
The Blades thought they had a third, but this time they were denied by the woodwork, when Louie Marsh’s shot came back off of the post.
However, Sheffield United would add a third late on in fortunate circumstances, as Williams' shot deflected past Simon Moore, with the City 'keeper helpless.
Tom Costello forced Davies into another stop in the 90th minute, but were unable to get back into the game, suffering defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre.
