Burnley edge out narrow result against the Sky Blues...

8 October 2022

The Sky Blues have fallen to a 1-0 defeat to Burnley at the Coventry Building Society Arena, snapping a four-game unbeaten streak.

Vincent Kompany's side took the lead just before half-time when Nathan Tella produced a moment of individual brillance to slot past Ben Wilson.

City were well-worth their money in the second half as they charged onward for the leveller, but they were unable to produce that finishing touch as Burnley take all three points.

The Clarets created their first clear-cut chance through former Sky Blue Ian Maatsen whose cross found Josh Cullen on the edge of the box, but his volley bounced past the post.

The Sky Blues banked themselves in as the visitors created a couple attacks in succession but found an opening of their own when Kasey Palmer’s clever reverse ball found Tyler Walker who did well to win a free-kick in dangerous territory.

As the half hour mark approached, the Clarets registered attempts through Josh Brownhill and Jay Rodriguez- both of which did little to threaten Ben Wilson in-between the sticks, however.

Mark Robins’ men grew into the tie with Kasey Palmer as the talisman, finding Fankaty Dabo who teased a delicate cross across the face of goal, just missing a final touch.

Nathan Tella gave the Clarets the lead minutes shy of the half-time whistle with a sumptuous bit of control followed by a neat finish.

The Sky Blues were denied by the crossbar as Jonathan Panzo’s header crashed the woodwork from Palmer’s corner and Viktor Gyökeres was unable to clean up on the follow up.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-1 Burnley

The Clarets carved out the opening chance swiftly after the restart through Jay Rodriguez, but score remained the same as the veteran’s effort hit the side netting.

Robins went bold, introducing four Sky Blues into the game on the 60 minute mark, switching to a back four as City hunted the equaliser.

Jonathan Panzo tried his luck from 18-yards-out after recovering Fabio Tavares' deep cross, but the defender's effort blazed over the bar.

Late substitute Todd Kane came inches away from bringing the Sky Blues back into the game as his volley flew past Bailey Peacock-Farrell's post.
