Coventry register first away win of the season...

15 October 2022

The Sky Blues have registered their first away victory of the season, beating Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Viktor Gyokeres' first-half goal was the difference between the two sides, after the Swede was quickest to react to a rebounded effort from Jamie Allen.

Gyokeres and Waghorn both had chances to double Coventry's lead during the second half, but Mark Robins' side held on to take a mighty three points.

The game's opening chance fell to the Sky Blues, and striker Viktor Gyokeres, after some persistence from the Swede to force the ball beyond Cardiff goalkeeper Ryan Allsop. However, his early effort did not reward him for his hard work, with his shot soaring over the crossbar.

The hosts were next to try their luck, when a dangerous cross from Niels Nkoukou just evaded the toe of Callum O'Dowda in the penalty area.

On the 22nd minute, Mark Robins made the decision to make a change at the back, with Callum Doyle being replaced by Michael Rose. Moments later, City calved out another opportunity through Jamie Allen, but the midfielder's header was easily saved.

City's opener game just before half-time as Gyokeres made up for his earlier miss by putting himself in the right place, at the right time to turn home Jamie Allen's saved shot. Allsop did well to deny Allen but was powerless to City's top goalscorer from slotting home with the goal gaping.

Coventry could have made it two before the break, when Matty Godden saw his header fall to the feet on Ben Sheaf in the area. However, the midfielder could not get his shot away.

After the break, Cardiff thought they had levelled when Callum Robinson rounded Ben Wilson and foudn the net. However, a conversation between Bobby Madley and one his linesmen resulted in the goal being chalked off. Robins' side responded with a counter attack that saw Gyokeres hit the side netting.

There were more chances for Coventry throughout the second half with both Gyokeres and Martyn Waghorn, introduced from the bench, both trying their luck. Gyokeres saw an effort searching for the near corner skim wide, while Waghorn's challenge on the goalkeeper almost presented him with an open goal.

Cardiff had chances to level the game, and two late penalty calls both waved away by Madley - but Coventry held on.
