PUSB: 'From The Board' versus Middlesbrough

3 October 2022

After each matchday programme this season, we publish the regular column from the Coventry City board on our website. You can read Coventry City Chief Executive Dave Boddy's column from our game against Middlesbrough below:

Good afternoon and welcome to the Coventry Building Society Arena for today’s game as we play Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship.

I would also like to welcome the players, staff, officials and supporters who join us from Middlesbrough for today’s game. With a good travelling number and the Sky Blue Army bound to be in full voice behind their team for our first Saturday home match of the season, I am looking forward to a really good atmosphere at the Arena today.

This is only our second home game of the season, following the three postponed games due to the well documented pitch issues at the start of the season and the home game on Saturday 10th September against West Bromwich Albion being postponed as a mark of respect to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Everybody at Coventry City Football Club was saddened to hear the news and whilst we didn’t have a home fixture during the period of mourning, we were part of a minute’s silence at both Luton Town and Birmingham City, both of which were impeccably observed by both sets of fans.

Today we also welcome Coventry City Women and Girls FC. They will be parading around the pitch at half-time, as well as holding a bucket collection to raise money for the Club pre-match as well. You will also see their players forming the guard of honour pre-match and also acting as the ball collectors during the game.

Ourselves and Sky Blues in the Community have partnered with Coventry City Women and Girls FC for the last seven years now, and they are going from strength-to-strength. Their range of teams and age groups is continuing to expand, while they are now playing their home games from a new venue too. Across the Club, they are developing and improving and it is great to see. Led by chair Laina Tebbutt and their team of coaches and volunteers, the onus is on participation of players and them enjoying the game. They are a true grassroots club who are proud to wear our badge, and we are proud to be working with them and our hope for the future is that it is a relationship that will continue to grow. We hope that Sky Blues fans will continue to support them and we hope that they enjoy their day with us this afternoon.

It was documented in the press that the four postponements we have suffered of home games this season have had a massive impact on the Club’s forecasted cashflow position at this stage of the season, with us being well over £1 million down on the forecasted position. This is due to match ticket receipts and Season Ticket funds, a percentage of which we only receive on a game-by-game basis as matches are played, and our cashflowing of remedial works to the pitch.

We only receive a percentage of Season Ticket funds in this way due to the changed approach of merchants to releasing funds post-COVID, while the pitch works are funded by us currently but will not result in additional costs overall for the Club.

Last month, Viktor Gyokeres, Gustavo Hamer and Ben Sheaf attended the first meeting of the Bedworth and Nuneaton Supporters Club, which was our first opportunity post-COVID to get players back at a Supporters Club meeting. This week, Matty Godden and Michael Rose also visited the Sky Blue Tavern, the CCFC themed bar in partnership with Dhillon’s Brewery. The interaction between players and fans has been a huge part of the success of the Football Club over recent years, so to get players back again at Supporters Clubs and also to the Sky Blue Tavern,  after nearly two and a half years is really important to us.

Now that Covid precautions at the Club have been able to relax as of the start of this season, we will be able to get the players back out in the community at Supporters Clubs and schools etc again and this is something we’re looking forward to.

Thank you for your continued support – enjoy the game. PUSB
