INTERVIEW: Viktor Gyökeres on Rotherham United draw and last-gap penalty

The Swede secured a late point for the Sky Blues from the spot…

Sky Blues striker Viktor Gyökeres spoke through his crucial penalty strike which saw his side earn a point in a 2-2 draw versus Rotherham.

The Sky Blues twice went behind at the Coventry Building Society Arena but fought back with goals from Gustavo Hamer and Gyökeres to extend City’s unbeaten streak to four matches.

Gyökeres stepped up to the penalty in the final minute, against fellow Sweden international and close friend Viktor Johansson, and dispatched to grab a familiar last-gasp draw.

Speaking to the media after the game, Gyökeres said:

On the result against Rotherham…

“It felt like we could’ve played a bit quicker, especially in the first half, but I think we created a lot of good chances anyway.

“It’s hard when you concede the first goal and you have to chase the equaliser and then they scored again in the second half and it’s hard to come back another time when it’s 2-1 to Rotherham.

“I think we played better in the second half and created some good chances but we need to play even better next game.

“We conceded and that’s football sometimes but I think we need to look at the positives today, we scored two goals in the second half and overall the last few games have been good, we’ve taken a lot of points, so we take the point and move on.”

On the pressure of taking a penalty at that stage…

“I was a little bit nervous, it’s been a long time since I’ve taken a penalty and at the end of the game we had to score and my friend from Sweden was in goal, so it was a special moment and nice to score obviously.

“I think it’s a mental game, he knows me and I know him and he was talking with me before, so it was a funny moment but it felt good to score.”

On the early injury to Martyn Waghorn and those of Matty Godden and Tyler Walker…

“It was hard when Martyn [Waghorn] went off early. Waggy and I play well together, and I’ve been finding it decent playing with him, so that wasn’t great but Kasey [Palmer] came on and did well and he’s a great player as well.’

“It’s always good when everyone is fit and healthy and that means there’s competition in the team.

“We need them all back but for now we have to look at the players we have fit and get them working together.”

On Gustavo Hamer’s performance…

“It was a really good goal and a great finish.

“He played great today and he’s been waiting to come back and now he is he shows he’s a really good player.”

On the hectic schedule ahead of the World Cup…

“For me personally I like to play games and now we have a lot of games at home which is also nice that we can play here.

“I think we have four or five at home and I really enjoy playing here, so it’s a good thing.”
