INTERVIEW: Chris Allen reflects on Sheffield United defeat

11 October 2022

Sky Blues Under-21s coach Chris Allen was disappointed after the Development side fell to a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United at the Alan Higgs Centre.

Two goals either side of half-time, followed by a third late on, condemned the Sky Blues to a loss against the league leaders.

Reflecting on the match following the full-time whistle, Allen told how the Under-21s needed to do more against the Blades to get any sort of result.

When asked on his thoughts on the game, Allen said: “Not a great one. A good one in terms of what we can get out of it, coming up against a side who are doing well in the league.

“However, it’s one when you want to get something out of it in terms of performances and maybe a result, but the lads didn’t equip themselves well today.”

The game was 0-0 until the half-hour mark, when United were awarded a penalty, which they ultimately dispatched.

Despite the scores being level at that point, Allen was still looking for more.

“First half it was a close game, we try and press the ball and it doesn’t go quite well and then there’s a shove in the back in the box and it’s a penalty.

“It was close up to that point and we’re looking at them to do a little bit more and impose themselves on the game.

“But until the last 15 minutes of the game when we’re trying to chase it a little bit we don’t see enough from the lads.”

Although there are some positives to take, Allen told how the Development side will use this game to work on the aspects of the game which led to their defeat.

“There’s always something you can look at in terms of positives. Harrison Nee came on and he was that spark down the left hand side for us.

“We were a bit short going for the first balls, second balls, balls going in-between, and we were two seconds too slow.

“We didn’t win individual battles and the passes were loose at times and those are the things, if you don’t have them in the game then you’re not going to get an outcome from it.

“If you’re looking for positives, yes there’s stuff to look at and to work on but there’s a bridge we need to gap.”
