INTERVIEW: Ben Wilson talks clean sheets, Blackpool and run in the side

The 'keeper looks ahead to the upcoming fixtures...

28 October 2022

Sky Blues ‘keeper Ben Wilson spoke of his enjoyment during his run in the starting eleven over the last few weeks.

Wilson has been between the sticks for the last 11 games, keeping five clean sheets along the way.

The 30-year-old is currently experiencing his longest run in the Sky Blues squad since his spell during the 2020/21 season and spoke of the difference between the two, due to the attending supporters in the stands.

Ben also looked ahead to the upcoming fixtures and spoke of his relationship with the other goalkeepers at the club…

Run in the side…

“Going back to covid when there were no fans in stadiums I had a good stint in goal then, but this that wasn’t the same feeling as I’m getting now.

“Obviously, with the way results have been going and the way the lads are performing it’s been a really positive block for me and long may it continue.”

The fans singing his name…

“They’ve been amazing and so loud home and away and they’ve been fantastic, especially when they sing my name, that’s quite a nice feeling, I’m not really used to that, so to hear that is amazing.”

Clean sheet record…

“As long as they continue to head and kick it like they have done then it makes my job a lot easier, and I can just continue talking and organizing as much as I can to keep the ball away from my goal.

“The ten lads in front of me have been doing an amazing job, right from the front all the way to the back and it’s a pleasure to play behind them.

“If I can keep my kit as clean as it is when I walk out, I’m happy! It’s always nice to keep a clean sheet and do something amazing in the game but at the end of the day a clean sheet is a clean sheet.

“Whether I have nothing to do or a lot of saves to make, I’m happy either way, but if can go through 90 minutes without touching the ball then it means my defense have done an amazing job, so I’ll be pleased either way.”

Run of fixtures…

“I think it’s just getting round the physical side of it.

“For the lads there’s no real time to recover and then you try and get some time on the grass, but the games come so fast and its non-stop so it’s just about trying to get as much recovery time as possible.”

Facing Blackpool’s attackers…

“We do stuff, and we watch clips, and we will know some of things they do, but every game is different for everyone, and you just have to react to it as it comes in the game.

“It’s nice to know what their strengths are but it’s about focusing on myself and doing my own job before I concentrate on anything they do.”

The Goalkeeper’s Union…

“Me and Simon have a fantastic relationship on and off the field. He works extremely hard, and we have little conversation to help one another and he’s a pleasure to work with.

“As is Tom Billson, the young lad coming through. We have such a good and unique relationship, and I must mention Aled as well before he gets jealous.

“We’ve got such a good close knit goalkeeper group that it’s a pleasure to be part of.”

The start to the season…

“It was a tough start to the season, but we never panicked or crumbled, and we stuck together and game-by-game we’re showing more and more of what we can do.

“A few weeks ago, we might have been going a bit more direct, but it was a plan that came off and that’s when the confidence builds and now the lads are back to playing football in spells and that’s where the confidence comes from and game by game it’s getting better.”
