Coventry City Under-18s moved one step closer to Professional Development League Cup progression on Saturday, drawing 2-2 with Shrewsbury Town.

Goals by Bradley Stretton and Charlie Manners pushed the Sky Blues into an early two-goal lead with their second being an impressive passing move that incorporated all of the side's attacking players.

However, two second-half goals from the Shrews left the game tied and City just one point away from progressing beyond the group stages of the competition.

"There were big positives on the day," said coach Eric Odhiambo. "The result has brought us that little bit closer to qualifying for the next stage of the tournament. All we need now is one point, and then we're into the next round.

"At the same time, being two goals up at one stage, it is hard not to be disapointed that we drew the game. We could have qualified there and then.

"Next up in this particular compettion we're facing Forest Green Rovers, so all we need is a draw to secure our place. We know what we need to do.

"The second goal was a really good showcase of what we try to do and how we try to play," continued Odhiambo.

"It was us at our best. There were moving parts, loads of players involved, and then bodies in the box trying to get on the end of the cross.

"After the game, we talked about the stuff that we were not so pleased with, but we did not dwell on it. We talked about what we will work on going into the weekend."

On Saturday, the young Sky Blues will return to league action against Wigan Athletic, a side tied on points with them in the U18s Professional Development League.

Odhiambo added: "Wigan will offer us a different challenge again. It's always difficult against Wigan but when we focus on ourselves and play to the best of our ability we know that can always do well."
