REPORT: Watford 0-1 Sky Blues

Three points and a clean sheet for the Sky Blues...

5 November 2022

The Sky Blues secure a 1-0 win against Watford with Viktor Gyökeres' goal sealing all three points at Vicarage Road.

The Sky Blues battled in a well-fought first half versus the Hornets but ended the first 45 minutes on top.

City capitalised on their sustained pressure five minutes after the restart when Viktor Gyökeres peeled off his man and tapped home to see his side leave Vicarage Road with all three points.

Gyökeres enjoyed a lively start to the match and proved to be a handful for the Watford backline.

The Swede combined well with Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer before unleashing a shot just wide of the mark after a powerful forward run.

Championship debutant Jack Burroughs stepped in well to intercept Watford’s move before picking out the onrushing Gyökeres who jinked in and out to fire down on goal, forcing a smart save from Daniel Bachmann.

Watford thought they had the lead when Keinan Davis converted from close range, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Kyle McFadzean in the build up.

The hosts grew into the game and came close to breaking the deadlock when Ken Sema chanced his luck from a free-kick, 25-yards-out, but the strike was met equally by Ben Wilson in the Sky Blues net.

Burroughs produced another silky moment to get out of trouble in a defensive area, leading to Gyökeres running down on goal, once again, only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle.

HALF-TIME: Watford 0-0 Sky Blues

A strong Sky Blues end to the first-half prompted a swift start to the second for the Hornets who came inches away from grabbing the go-ahead goal through Ken Sema.

But it was City that took the lead moments later.

Gustavo Hamer found Jamie Allen who looked up and struck a cross to Gyökeres leaving the striker to finish past Bachman to give the Sky Blues a one-goal lead.

Watford continued to push for the equaliser and tested the Sky Blues backline on several occasions, but City rose to the challenge to take the points back to Coventry.
