INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on QPR win and Viktor Gyökeres' goals

Viktor Gyökeres' goals guided City to a 2-0 win...

12 November 2022

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins has described his side's win over QPR as "one of the best" he has since at the club.

Viktor Gyökeres fired home a double for City as they climbed to within two points of the play-off places ahead of the World Cup break.

The result also saw the club keep their 10th clean sheet in 13 games.

Speaking to the media at full-time, Robins said:

On the win against QPR….

“It was up there with one of the best performances I’ve seen. We played against a really strong side, it was a fairly even game and we played some brilliant football.

“We kept their chances down to very few, they looked like they were leggy, and understandably so, and we were less leggy, we recovered well and it’s good to get the last bit of illness out of the system.

“To score two goals in the manner we did was fantastic, Viktor [Gyökeres wriggled free against Jake Clarke-Salter and he put the ball in the back of the net which was a brilliant start for us.

“We continued in the same vein in the second half where we had to defend solidly because they’ve got some big players in their team and I thought in the second-half we gave the ball away too easily which leveled things up, we didn’t want to give them any encouragement to build momentum.

“Then we get a second goal a great ball inside from Callum O’Hare to Viktor and he nearly got another one with a header and there was another chance on the counter-attack where I think Gustavo [Hamer] picked the wrong pass, he could’ve gone left to two players with Callum and Jamie there, so if he picks that out I think we get another goal, but I won’t be greedy."

On the support of the Sky Blue Army...

“The atmosphere was electric. They brought 4,000 away supporters and our support was really noisy and that helped us get over the line again and coming into this break it has been a phenomenal 12-game spell."

On the plan for the World Cup break…

“You need a break but you don’t want a break, it’s a double-edged sword really.

“You’ve got players that are injured that will come back and we’ve got some time now to recover.

“Some teams are doing things differently and we’re going to have a break for a couple of weeks and then have a couple of weeks work back into it.

“I think with the number of games we’ve played and the lack of bodies we’ve got, we’ve got 17 fit players before today, there’s still some illness in the camp, so hopefully we can get a bit of a breather and come back strong and start well against Reading on the 10th of December."

On the Sky Blues' form and the shape of the Championship...

“We looked at it from the Middlesbrough game after the international break and from then to now it’s been an incredible turnaround.

“We were on the front foot and that comes with the work, the games, the confidence, and the results we’re getting.

“There was some brilliant football and all credit to the players because they look like they’re at the level but it’s still early days as we’ve played fewer games than others.

“It's a really tight league this year and you’re looking at six, or seven, points behind you, so everything is within touching distance and we’ve got to focus on the performance and now recover.

“Now we can reflect and its a big spell for us and the confidence coming into the second half of the season is good and we shouldn’t lose too much, I think it’s been a phenomenal part of the season in these past 12 games and today was up there with the best."

On Kyle McFadzean’s performance…

“He was outstanding and it was difficult to pick any individual but he had to make the challenge because they were starting to get away, so he had to make the foul."

On Liam Kelly’s return to the squad…

“He’s fit enough to be on the bench today and he was fit enough to play a part today but cleat he’s only trained for a couple of days.

“It was great to have him on the team sheet and great to have him in the dressing room and now he has a couple of weeks to get ready for the next part of the season."
