ACADEMY: Under 18s fall to narrow defeat against Cardiff City

The Sky Blues youngsters slip to defeat...

Sky Blues Under-18s coach Eric Odhiambo was pleased with what he saw from City’s youngsters, despite defeat against Cardiff City.

The Sky Blues fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre this past weekend, despite leading twice in the game through goals from Kai Andrews.

The Bluebirds ultimately came back into the game and the Under-18s were unable to prevent the visitors snatching all three points.

Reflecting after the final whistle, Odhiambo discussed the positives to come from the result.

“Saturday’s games told a similar story to recent times, where the games been decided by fine margins,” Eric said.

“For an hour we were excellent against a competitive Cardiff team, twice taking the lead through well worked team goals.

“Both of our goals were finished by Kai Andrews, who I must say was excellent on the day, so there were positives to come from the game.”

However, a theme throughout the season which Eric highlighted was the Under-18s need to improve on defending their goal.

Despite scoring goals in games, a problem has been at the other end and that is something they will focus on improving over the coming weeks.

“The problem for us at the moment is, collectively as a team, we must do better at defending our goal.

“We’re scoring goals, and it shows in our play, but we must show the same desire in our penalty area if we want the results that some of our good play deserves.”

Next time out, the Under-18s face Peterborough United this weekend, as they look to get back to winning ways.
