REPORT: Stoke City 1-1 Sky Blues

Score draw at the bet365...

7 May 2022

The Sky Blues wrapped up their second consecutive Championship season with a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

Viktor Gyökeres put the Sky Blues ahead with a fine finish, but the Swede’s strike was cancelled out later on by Sam Clucas’ hit on the verge of half-time.

Both sides challenged for the winner- both unable to find the crucial goal.

Viktor Gyökeres’s tallied his 17th league goal of the season after a quarter of an hour when he drove forward from Jamie Allen’s slide-rule pass and slotted home to give City the lead.

Jordan Shipley came close to a sumptuous lob finish, again from Allen’s through ball, but the City academy graduate saw his effort bounce narrowly past the mark.

Moments after, Callum O’Hare forced Joe Bursik into a tough save when he executed a magnificent Cruyff turn to immediately let fly for the top corner.

However, despite a dominant first-half display from the Sky Blues, it was the hosts that grabbed the game’s next goal with Sam Clucas sweeping his shot in the bottom corner.

HALF-TIME: Stoke City 1-1 Sky Blues

The Potters came out for the second-half with intent and Nick Powell’s curling effort on goal looked to pull them ahead for the first time, but Ben Wilson’s fingertip save helped steer away the danger.

A sweet piece of interplay between four Sky Blues players presented a chance again for Shipley as Gyökeres sent the midfielder through, however the tight angle proved too much to get any purchase on the strike.

In the sequence after, a darting decoy run from Kyle McFadzean presented O’Hare with a chance on goal as he skipped past the Potters’ defence, but fizzled out with City knocking on the door.

Mark Robins’ side continued to battle in search of the go-ahead goal and came close on occasions through Gyökeres, once more, Todd Kane, and Jake Clarke-Salter.

But it was Ian Maatsen's chance that was the pick of them all as the full-back leapt higher than the rest, but was denied by James Chester off the line.
