INTERVIEW: George Burroughs Bristol City Reaction

The defender scored the winning goal for City...

After scoring the winning goal in the Professional Development League final, George Burroughs spoke of his delight following the final whistle.

The 19 year-old centre-back had a stroke of luck when Jay McGrath’s shot deflected off the defender and wrong-footed the Bristol City goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

“First of all, when Jay strook the ball, I was just trying to get out of the way of it!” Burroughs said.

“But I managed to get a flick on it and then it was like slow motion on its way into the goal and then I didn’t know what to do after that.

“I did a knee slide and got cramp as I did it, but it was a great moment and although it wasn’t the best goal I’ve ever scored, it was definitely my favourite.

“After that, you have to switch on quickly and you have to not get carried away because there were still 15 minutes to go so we still had a job to do.”

The Sky Blues raced into a 2-0 lead after just ten minutes when goals from Marco Rus and Ryan Howley found the back of the net.

However, Bristol City came back into the game and drew level midway through the second half, leaving City the task of retaking the lead.

“We were 2-0 up after ten minutes so we knew they were going to come at us and we had to be ready for that and we carried on in the same focus.

“Then they get it back to 2-2, but we still believed we could win the game and then we get the third goal its about keeping that and defending from there.

“We did it in the semi-final as well, we did it like three times (coming from behind) we just believe and it’s all about that belief, even when you’re behind you have to believe you can get back into games.”

Despite the season coming down to just one game against Bristol City, Burroughs told how his teammates were all excited rather than nervous and that played it’s part in playing the game rather than the occasion.

“The nerves were ok; I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I’d be.

“There was a big build up and everyone was looking forward to it, but when it comes down to it you just have to treat it like any other game and that’s what we did, and I think you could tell and it helped us get the win.”
