16 May 2022

Today marks 35 years since Coventry City won the FA Cup!

The Sky Blues lifted the trophy on 16th May 1987 at Wembley, after a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs took an early lead through Clive Allen but were pegged back almost immediately as Dave Bennett round Ray Clemence to score.

Tottenham would take the lead into the break when Gary Mabbutt scored after a mix up at the back for City.

In the second half, the Sky Blues scored arguably the greatest ever FA Cup Final goal. Keith Houchen played the ball wide right to Bennett who whipped in a fantastic cross which was met with a diving header by Houchen to make the score 2-2.

Into extra-time, it was Coventry City who would score the decisive goal. Lloyd McGrath broke down the right and his cross came off the knee of Gary Mabbutt and looped up and over Clemence and into the Spurs goal.

The Sky Blues saw out the remainder of extra time to lift the FA Cup - the Club's first major trophy!

There were jubilant scenes, led by the managerial duo of John Sillett and George Curtis, as thousands of Sky Blues fans celebrated the triumph.
