INTERVIEW: Mark Robins Derby County Reaction

The gaffer’s thoughts after Derby draw…

19 March 2022

Sky Blues manager Mark Robins gave his penalty verdict as he reflected on the draw against Derby.

Both side’s captains Matty Godden and Tom Lawrence exchanged finishes as the game finished a score draw.

Mark Robins admits it was a ‘fair result,’ however questioned the manner in which Derby found their equaliser, whilst highlighting the talent in the Rams’ roster.

“I thought the penalty was really harsh, I thought the referee couldn’t wait to give it and Tom Lawrence has looked for Ben Sheaf’s leg and gone over it and then the penalty was a joke, it was a brilliant penalty, no keeper is getting anywhere near it.

“There’s ways of trying to beat teams. They make it difficult for you, they get into positions that make it difficult for you, they’ve got some quality players in the team, Tom Lawrence and Ravel Morrison have unbelievable quality.

“They’ve also got a lot of young players that have come through from the academy and they contribute greatly to the team and they’ve got nothing to lose and have done all season and that’s the way they are.”

Robins believes the Sky Blues could’ve capitalised on their chances to win the game, but firstly commended Godden’s opener, before highlighting the changes he’s been forced into.

“The interplay between Callum and Matty Godden was outstanding, a little one-two with headers and it fell into Matty’s pass to hit it first time, it was a brilliant finish and just what Matty does and that gives us a leg up in the game.

“From that point on, we looked like we could play on the counter attack and get something from the game.

"Vik’s chance was a big chance for us and the keeper made a good save, but we’ve got to finish the game off, but they had a chance at the end and could’ve won it with a flicked header off the post.

“We looked tired, when you’re down to the bare bones and you’re forced into another change which means you’ve got two players playing centre-half that aren’t centre-half.

"We’ve got to try and get everybody back as quick as we can, having said that I thought Sheaf and Bidders were outstanding alongside Dom, it’s one of those games where you can get away with it, there’s not too many of those games in this division.”
