REPORT: Under 21s beat Nuneaton Borough

28 July 2022

Coventry City Under 21s came away with a 2-1 victory over Nuneaton Borough in a pre-season friendly on Thursday night.

First-half goals from Fabio Tavares and Marco Rus were enough for the Sky Blues, while Tyrell Waite's header was the only goal for the hosts.

City opened the scoring after just 6 minutes. After some wayward passing at the back for Nuneaton, Tavares ran onto the loose ball behind the hosts backline. Tavares was still 35 yards out but kept composed to move in on the Nuneaton goal and hit a smart, looping finish from 25 yards out over the keeper.

In a half where a strong Nuneaton side pressed and didn't allow the Sky Blues time on the ball, City maintained their composure and control of proceedings.

Twenty minutes later, the Sky Blues lead was doubled by Marco Rus. Neat interplay by the City left flank kept possession and moved the Boro defenders around, opening an opportunity down the wing. The ball was played across the six yard box from the byline and, when the ball wasn't cleared, Rus was on hand to hammer the ball home.

Nuneaton grabbed a goal back just before the break when a ball into the City box from the Boro left was met by the head of Tyrell Waite.

The tempo of the game slowed in the second-half, though a City corner saw Jay McGrath's header superbly cleared off the line, while at the other end keeper Tom Billson was required to make a couple of smart saves late on.

Sky Blues: Tom Billson, Dermi Lusala, Josh Reid, Jay McGrath, George Burroughs, Marco Rus (Trialist), Jack Burroughs, Aidan Finnegan, Ryan Howley, Tom Costello (Harrison Nee, 45'), Fabio Tavares.
