Coventry City have made it three wins on the bounce in pre-season...

12 July 2022

Coventry have beaten Forest Green Rovers 1-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

Ben Sheaf’s first-half goal was the difference between the two sides with 22 of Mark Robins' players having got yet more pre-season minutes under their belts.

It means Coventry continue their winning pre-season run following victories against both Leamington and Nottingham Forest.

The game’s first chance fell to Forest Green with Reece Brown rattling Simon Moore’s crossbar from close range.

Coventry’s Josh Reid came close moments later after some good work in midfield from Kasey Palmer, but his effort was dragged wide of the near post.

City would open the scoring after 11 minutes thanks to a stunner from Sheaf, who wriggled free from a tight space in midfield to curl it home from outside the area.

There were multiple openings for both Tyler Walker and Viktor Gyokeres but neither were able to extend Coventry’s lead before the half time break.

Simon Moore was called into action ten minutes later, as he had to be alert to get down to his left to deny Corey O’Keefe’s low drilled effort from just inside of the area.

City almost had a second and it came down the right when Ben Sheaf release Fabio Tavares and his ball across the box was diverted onto his own woodwork by Oliver Casey.

With 60 minutes on the clock the Sky Blues made ten changes with the eleven changing to the following: Simon Moore, Josh Eccles, Michael Rose, Ryan Howley, Jake Bidwell, Todd Kane, Jamie Allen, Liam Kelly, Callum O’Hare, Martyn Waghorn, Matty Godden

Following those changes, a first chance for one of the substitutes came and it was Callum O’Hare who released a shot from distance, but his effort was saved behind for a corner.

That set piece presented Michael Rose with a header at the back post, but his effort was saved by Luke McGee in the Forest Green goal.

Todd Kane replaced Reid down the left and he was involved in the action, picking out the head of Martyn Waghorn, but on the stretch, the striker couldn’t direct his header towards goal.

The striker almost produced an outstanding goal when he caught Matty Godden’s ball back across goal on the volley, but his shot whistled past the post.

A fantastic move down the right saw Callum O’Hare played down the line and he picked out Josh Eccles inside of the area, but his first timed shot went wide of goal.

XI: Simon Moore; Fankaty Dabo, Kyle McFadzean, Dom Hyam, Josh Reid; Ben Sheaf, Gustavo Hamer; Kasey Palmer, Fabio Tavares, Viktor Gyokeres, Tyler Walker.

Subs used: Simon Moore, Josh Eccles, Michael Rose, Ryan Howley, Jake Bidwell, Todd Kane, Jamie Allen, Liam Kelly, Callum O’Hare, Martyn Waghorn, Matty Godden.
