INTERVIEW: Ben Wilson reacts to Portsmouth win

The Sky Blues ended their pre-season with another win...

23 July 2022

Ben Wilson believes the Sky Blues are looking good heading into the new Championship campaign after ending pre-season with a win over Portsmouth.

Second-half goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Jonathan Panzo sealed a 2-0 win at Fratton Park and helped maintain City's 100% pre-season record.

Looking back on what’s been a successful run of games, and over Portsmouth, Wilson said: "I think it’s been a good test for all of the lads.

"It’s been tough compared to the last few years, but there’s nothing the lads have been told to do that’s been too much, so it’s been a positive camp, so far, and the lads are looking good."

Wilson and Moore have shared minutes during pre-season but one only can start the opening fixture against Sunderland.

"For myself, its been a really good pre-season. I feel good and have felt good throughout, and the battle between myself and Simon [Moore] is good, healthy competition," he continued.

"It’s a headache for the gaffer and you want to do something to impress him but, at the same time, it’s about helping the lads and getting as much out of the games going into next week.

“Simon is a class act, even today he made a few brilliant saves, but at the end of the day it’s about myself right now and hopefully I’ve done enough to go into next week and even if I’ve not, I’m still going to be beside Simon and supporting him all the way just like I did last year."

The trip to the Stadium of Light will return Wilson to familiar territory, to face the club where he started his career.

“Going back home, being up there with the family and with the lads there to watch me would be amazing - but at the same time, I'm going up there as a Coventry City player and to make sure we get the three points."
