FIRST WORDS: Tom Costello

1 July 2022

Sky Blues striker Tom Costello is looking to kick-on after completing his move to the club earlier today.

The 19-year-old has agreed a two-year deal at City following his departure from Wigan Athletic after the expiry of his contract.

The move is a first for Tom and he is relishing the chance to show what he can do at the Sky Blues next season.

“I’m delighted to be here.” Costello said.

“It’s a big club and I know what it’s all about and moving away from home for the first time on my own, it’s very exciting and I just can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve adapted quite well and settled into the group and the lads have all been great and I’m looking forward to learning a new style of football and I’m ready to kick on.”

Costello enjoyed success at Wigan, finishing the 2020/21 season as the leading goalscorer in the Professional Development League with their under-18s side.

Tom has also been a thorn in the side for the Sky Blues, having scored against City for the Latics.

“I’m a big physical striker, I love the challenge of playing against a centre-back and I’m a willing competitor and hopefully over the next year the fans will hear and see more about me.

“I’ve played here a few times and I know what its all about and I’ve scored at the Higgs a few times, which some of the staff may not be happy about!

“I want to score goals for Coventry now and I’m looking forward to getting that first one and kicking on.”

One of the big reasons for Costello choosing to join City was for the opportunities that are given to younger players by Mark Robins.

Tom knows that he needs to work hard in order to impress while with the Sky Blues and that hard work has already begun.

“First and foremost, I have to train well with the under-23s, play well and get my name noticed around the club for my performances with the 23s.

“Hopefully that will come if my performances are up to scratch, and I do well.

“It’s great to see lads go and train with the first team and they have that exposure, and I can see a pathway there, as long as my performances are at that level.

“The club as a whole, the academy to the first team, everyone has been great with me since I’ve been here.”
