City get minutes in the tank...

18 January 2022

Coventry City were 9-0 winners over Solihull Moors B as members of the City squad got some important minutes in the bank.

The Sky Blues took the lead with just under two minutes on the clock and it came down the right when Julien Dacosta intercepted a loose pass and played the ball inside to Martyn Waghorn and he slotted it past the ‘keeper.

The lead was quickly doubled this time it was Fabio Tavares who latched onto a through ball and with just the ‘keeper to beat he sent him the wrong way to make it 2-0.

On the ten minute mark it was 3-0 and it was Tavares again, this time he raced onto a through ball from Blaine Rowe and he took it past the ‘keeper and tapped into an empty net.

Martyn Waghorn almost scored a spectacular solo goal when he flicked it over the defenders head, cut inside and curled an effort towards the far corner, but the keeper made a good stop.

The striker almost produced another superb goal, this time from a free-kick around 30 yards out, but his set-piece was well saved.

The lead was extended again and it was Tavares who scored his third goal of the game after 19 minutes, as a superb through ball from Jodi Jones released Josh Reid and he pulled it back for Fabio to tap home.

As we reached the half hour mark, Jodi Jones almost got in on the act, as his shot from the edge of the area rattled the crossbar.

The attacker did get his reward just after the half hour mark when he carried the ball forward from the halfway line and smashed the ball into the back of the net from 25 yards out.

Jodi made it 6-0 four minutes later when he was on the end of Julien Dacosta’s pulled cross back to fire home.

At the other end, Simon Moore was called into action for the first time as he saved a penalty from Solihull, after Jay McGrath had been adjudged to bring down their striker in the box.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 6-0 Solihull Moors

After the break it was more of the same, this time Jones found the run of Tavares and his shot was well saved and then on the follow-up Waghorn connected on the stretch, but his shot went over.

Tavares was unlucky to not get a fourth of the game when he closed down the goalkeeper and the ricochet skimmed off the top of the bar.

The striker did get his fourth of the game on the hour mark after some good work by Josh Reid down the left enabled Tavares to breakthrough and slot the ball past the ‘keeper.

Moore was called into action once again when he had to be alert to produce a fine save to deny Solihull pulling one back.

Julien Dacosta will count himself unlucky to not have scored after some good work form Will Bapaga enabled the wing-back to race through on goal, but his shot was saved.

Another substitute, Ricardo Dinanga, came close to making it 8-0 when Tavares laid it back to him, but his shot went over the bar.

It was 8-0 with four minutes remaining and it came through a mistake at the back which saw Josh Eccles given the opportunity to get on the scoresheet.

With only 90 seconds left the lead was stretched to 9-0 and again a miss hit clearance came off Dacosta and he squared it for Dinanga to score.
