Goal fest away from home...

15 January 2022

The Sky Blues ran out 4-1 winners against Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium, after a resounding team performance.

A rampant first-half display gave City a two-goal lead early on, until Peterborough drew one back through Jorge Grant.

Looking to extend their lead, the Sky Blues probed the Posh defence throughout the second half, getting their reward with two late goals to bring the points back to Coventry.

The Sky Blues dictated the opening stages of the match and took the lead when Gustavo Hamer rifled home a strike from 25-yards-out for the opening goal.

A flurry of chances fell City’s way in the moments after the opener, as they looked to capitalise on their dominance, with Callum O’Hare coming close on two occasions.

City continued to attack, doubling their lead through Matty Godden, who cropped up with a sublime finish against his former side.

Peterborough looked to gain a foothold in the match with a few chances of their own, but Ben Wilson was quick on his feet to make a couple of routine stops.

Jamie Allen etched out the game’s next chance, latching onto a Hamer through ball and lobbing the keeper, but his attempt sailed narrowly wide.

From the goal-kick, the hosts then went down the other end of the pitch and pulled back a goal when Jorge Grant fired into the top corner from range.

O’Hare continued to trouble the Posh defence and came agonisingly close to adding City’s third of the day when his shot crashed off the post.

The Sky Blues marched forward through Jordan Shipley whose fierce effort was sent out for a corner by David Cornell, with Hamer whipping a shot just past the post from the resulting set piece.

A clever free-kick routine saw Allen find space in the box before hitting a shot against the post, as City hit the woodwork for the second time in the half.

After mounting the pressure all through the second half, the Sky Blues finally found that cushion goal with Nathan Thompson bundling the ball into his own net from Todd Kane’s cross.

Substitute Viktor Gyökeres announced himself to the game late on, breaking away from the posh defence and squaring it back for Godden to fire home and seal the win.
