INTERVIEW: Viktor Gyökeres Stoke City Reaction

Marking victory with his 10th league goal…

26 January 2022

Sky Blues striker Viktor Gyökeres shared his delight at returning to the score sheet, as his goal proved decisive against Stoke City.

Viktor Gyökeres grabbed the game’s only goal in the 68th minute and reflected on the hard-fought win.

“It was a tough game, but I think we played well and kept going all the way through, obviously they had a spell in the end, where they tried to get the equaliser, but we defended well and deserved the three points.

“They’re all so physical, the centre backs, in this league, so you have to use your body and try to be stronger than them, it was a tough battle, but we won this one.

“It was a tough one Saturday [against QPR], I think we deserved to win, but didn’t get anything from it, so it’s really nice to get the three points today, it’s very important.”

After a flying start to the season in the goal charts, the Swede was unable to find the back of the net for a period of time and therefore spoke on the joy of scoring once again.

“It was a very good feeling, I can tell you that, we had to win and we got the three points and it’s very nice when you score as well.

“I got a good pass from Ben Sheaf, who won the ball in the middle, and then passed to me on the right hand side and then I took it forward and Callum and Waggy made some good runs towards the goal to create some space for me to shoot and I got a good strike.

“It’s also nice to score outside the box, but I score most goals inside, I can take another one outside, but you have to score in the box also.”

Hit with injuries and other absentees, the Sky Blues were forced into making some changes, but Gyökeres praised the team for their resilience, helping them to the win against the Potters, as well as talking about his striking competition at the club.

“I think that makes the win even better because it’s not always easy to bring new players in, new players that maybe haven’t played with us that much, so it can be difficult to find the connection with players, but I think we did really well and they played a really good game.

“I think we are three very good strikers and it’s a good competition, we just need to work together and do good things together.”
