INTERVIEW: Mark Robins Peterborough Reaction

Gaffer's thoughts after Peterborough win...

15 January 2022

Mark Robins praised his side for a well-deserved win against Peterborough United.

The Sky Blues' goals came in quick-fire pairs, at the beginning of the first half and the end of the second, as they rose to victory against Peterborough.

City boss Mark Robins reflected on the game, breaking down how his side finished the job at the Weston Homes Stadium.

“I thought we weathered the storm, we started off brightly, held the ball well and created some good openings.

"It was frustrating a little bit because we didn’t take our chances earlier but it was a really well taken goal, Matty Godden’s goal, it was a brilliant finish.

“At times in the game we were guilty of giving the ball away easily, but we reacted pretty well, picking up loose balls and mount attacks.

"I thought Shipley was brilliant at left-back and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself. He put some good balls into the box, defended well when he needed to and on the ball he was generally very good, so I thought we were well worthy of the win.

“However, we did give them too many opportunities I thought and they came and changed their shape and were running with purpose. We gave the ball away and they were on the front foot and attacking us and once that happens you’ve got to take the game by the scruff of the neck and be calm.

“It’s a great result a really good performance, some good performances within the squad and I’m delighted really.”

Robins was wary of the challenge Darren Ferguson’s side posed and reacted to how the Sky Blues dealt with the tricky Posh attack.

“It was hard-fought, I think that when you play against Darren’s sides, I say it all the time they test you, they always throw numbers forward and they’ve got a lot of pace with players that will press.

“With the diamond, it’s been good for them, they’ve had some brilliant results here and they are a different kettle of fish at home than they are away from home and you have to be able to cope with that.

"They’re brave and they’re expansive with an attractive style that the supporters enjoy and they’ve been great here at home and they make it very difficult for you.

“They changed shape and on the edge of our box we’ve not dealt with it, it’s a bit scruffy and it’s a brilliant finish in the corner, that was disappointing going into half time.

"Then coming out second half, they’ve really come for us and we’ve managed to keep in tact but also managed to play some really good football and some really good chances and if it weren’t for the post and the goalkeeper, it could’ve been more than four.

“I like the performance because its tough to come here and play, other teams have found it difficult and we’ve caught them on a day where we’re somewhere near back to where we need to be, which is great to see because that’s been the concern in the period where we’ve not played enough games."
