INTERVIEW: Jake Clarke-Salter Middlesbrough Preview

An away trip to Riverside…

28 January 2022

Sky Blues defender Jake Clarke-Salter reflected on the season so far, ahead of tomorrow's clash with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

After joining from Premier League side Chelsea on loan in the summer window, defender Jake Clarke Salter has gone onto be a mainstay in Mark Robins’ side.

The loanee spoke on his time at the club, on top of his relationship with the other Sky Blues centre-backs.

“We’re all close, everyone adds different things when they play, but we’re all working hard to get the starting spot and we’re all supportive of each other and the main thing is the team doing well.

“I really enjoy playing next to [McFadzean], you can tell he’s played lots of games, he’s experienced and I always know he’s going to cover me if the ball goes over my head, he’s a really nice guy off the pitch also, which is always a bonus.

“One hundred percent, as soon as I came in the lads were really welcoming, I think the mix is really important, win, lose, or draw, everyone’s got the same ambition, we’re all enjoying it this season and long may it continue.”

As the Sky Blues sit in 9th place heading into the weekend, an away trip to 8th-placed Middlesbrough awaits, where Clarke-Salter and the team will be looking to leapfrog their opponents in the table.

The defender reflected on the past games against Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City, before looking ahead to the game against The Boro.

"We needed [a clean sheet], in, the league anyway, we played really well, but most importantly we got the win and it’s a bonus on top to get a clean sheet.

“Every game in the Championship is important, especially if you want to do good, every point and every three points we can get is massive to our season, the lads are really working hard to get as many points as possible, it’s good to get the win, now it’s onto the next one.

“You don’t go into games looking to lose, you want to win as many games as possible, if we keep winning games, who knows what might happen by the end of the season, but right now it’s game by game and if we keep picking up results, who knows what will happen.

“I like playing as many games as possible, it’s a good stadium and a good team, so it’ll be a good test for us, so I’m looking forward to it.

“We have a style that suits me more and I’m really enjoying playing with the ball more, there’s a lot of young players in the squad, but lots of experience, it’s a really tight-knit group and I’m really enjoying it."

After a strong start his Sky Blues campaign, Clarke-Salter suffered an Achilles injury which then sidelined him for a short while before the turn of the new year.

Having now returned to the side, the defender is raring to go again and recapture his form from where he left off.

“I’m able to play again now, so that’s massive for me and hopefully I can keep putting in performances and keep contributing to the team to get some wins.

“I feel like before I got injured and had covid, I was in really good form, then I had the injury which hindered my performances a little bit, but that’s no excuse.

"Now I feel like I’m fully fit and getting that consistent level again and hopefully I can rack up the games and contribute as much as I can.

“It’s been really good, the lads are great, had a slight knock-back through covid and injury, so I’m happy to be back now and playing and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
