INTERVIEW: Mark Robins Bristol City Reaction

Another late Sky Blues winner...

22 February 2022

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins praised his side after Viktor Gyökeres sealed a late 2-1 win away at Bristol City.

Following on from Dom Hyam’s stoppage time goal against Barnsley on Saturday, Viktor Gyökeres popped up late to grab another win at the the death for the Sky Blues.

Mark Robins was thrilled with his side’s performance against a Bristol City team who pushed the Sky Blues all the way to the end.

“Tactically it was a really difficult game, tactically, physically, mentally,” Robins started.

“It was a tough game, they’re full of good players and have got some pace, energy and quality in the team, with Semenyo, Chris Martin and Weimann, they’ are a difficult team to try and get on top of and we knew that was going to be the case.

“They were outstanding and it’s a brilliant three points, make no mistake, that’s one of the toughest games I think we’ve faced away from home this season, they moved it across the back well and found pockets of space, but we could’ve had one or two more.

''The goal that they scored was disappointing from our perspective, but you could tell they’d worked on it and they executed it pretty well, but the rest of it we’ve thrown bodies in when we’ve needed to.

''I think that was an outstanding away performance, a brilliant result.”

The return of Gustavo Hamer was a major boost for the travelling Sky Blues, with the midfield technician chipping in with two crucial assists.

Robins highlighted his importance to the side, as well as picking out the finish of Ian Maatsen and Gyökeres, with a special nod to the defensive performance of the back line.

“It’s a luxury, [Gustavo’s] outstanding, the ball in for Mats’ goal is fantastic, exactly what we were looking at before the game, amongst other things, but fantastic execution, brilliant run, great awareness of space and Mats has hit it true and in the far corner and as soon as it left his boot.

“On the second one, the first bit is his speed to release and anticipation to win the ball, his drive away from the man because they were making fouls all night, he drove at the heart of it and knowing he’s got one either side he picked it, the weight of the pass, the execution and the delivery and the moment from Vik to get onto that and the finish was brilliant.

“We showed some really good defensive qualities, some patience, some great movement and counter attacking and some great finishing, the two goals were outstanding.

“We moved our lines really well and didn’t give them space in behind that they were craving because that’s the way they’re trying to play and the defenders did really well and it’s a physical game as well because they hit us at times and they were tactically really good.”
