INTERVIEW: Ian Maatsen Reading Reaction

Maatsen reflects on away victory...

13 February 2022

Sky Blues goalscorer Ian Maatsen reflected on his contribution to the scoreline in yesterday’s dramatic 3-2 victory at Reading.

Maatsen’s 65th minute winner ensured that City took all three points, as fellow defenders Dom Hyam and Michael Rose also got their names on the scoresheet.

“I went in behind with the run, Viktor saw me and I thought just one thing: just kick it, and it went in so I’m buzzing,” Maatsen mentioned.

“I think that when someone scores it gives a boost to the whole team, individually as well as for me. It helped the team to liven up again.

“We just had to get our momentum back, to come together as a team.”

Maatsen also looked back on Hyam’s equaliser only moments before half time as a major turning point in the contest, as well as Rose’s effort only two minutes after the break.

“That gave us an extra boost in the game, we kept believing and at half time we cooled down and relaxed, said that everyone had to be a level higher and we did it.

“It was a brilliant goal [from Rose]. I think we defended well too; there were a couple of chances at the end but we stayed strong and picked up the points.”

Recent games have seen Maatsen adopt a more advanced role in Robins’ team selections, but the 19-year-old spoke of his willingness to play wherever needed for the Sky Blues.

“You do the best for the team, you give 100 percent, you try to do that every day and it doesn’t matter where I play.

“I’ve played other positions before and I have no problems with changing positions, so wherever I play I try to give 100 percent for the team.

“Hopefully I will score a couple more goals, that would be nice.

“I came back strong from my injury and I feel fine, I feel fresh so I want to maintain that until the end of the season, to stay healthy, to stay fit.”

Next up for the Sky Blues is Cardiff away on Tuesday night, and Maatsen spoke of the need to continue the momentum going forwards.

“It gives us fresh energy to go again on Tuesday, because games are coming fast so we need to be ready.

“Every game is different, they are a good team, a big side, so we will be ready and play well to try and get the three points there as well.”
