The Sky Blues edge late victory against Baggies...

21 December 2022

A last minute penalty from SkyBet Championship top goalscorer Viktor Gyökeres earned the Sky Blues a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion.

The Sky Blues were in the ascendancy from the off and came close to an opener when Gustavo Hamer clipped the post from an in-swinging corner.

Efforts from Ben Sheaf and Hamer followed as City edged nearer to the go-ahead goal, but both attempts flew narrowly past Alex Palmer’s right-hand post.

Viktor Gyökeres was next to try his luck, dropping deep to receive off Hamer and striking fiercely just wide of the frame of the goal.

For all their possession, the Sky Blues had to stay alert at the back and did so when Callum Doyle was quick to clear off the line from Jed Wallace’s penalty box strike.

Hamer’s 25-yard effort minutes before half-time looked to be destined for the back of the net but Palmer did well to palm away the strike and keep the score level heading into the break.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Jamie Allen kick-started the action for the second half with a curling strike from the edge of the box, but his chance proved a comfortable save for Palmer.

Jonathan Panzo came inches away from grabbing a goal in back to back games when he leapt highest to meet Hamer’s corner, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Hamer stepped off corner duty, opting to receive short from Kasey Palmer and unleashing towards goal but the midfielder’s strike was pushed away from danger for another time.

City looked to be heading towards a second consecutive draw but a late run saw Gyökeres draw a foul in the penalty area from which he stepped up from the spot and dispatched for a classic late Sky Blues winner.
