REPORT: Reading 1-0 Sky Blues

Mark Robins' side have fallen to defeat in Berkshire...

10 December 2022

The Sky Blues have fallen to defeat upon their return to Championship action, beaten 1-0 by Reading.

Coventry dominanted the game's chances, with golden opportunities falling to the likes of Callum O'Hare and Ben Sheaf, but failed to find a way past Joe Lumley in the Royals net.

Amadou Mbengue scored the game's only goal, when he nodded home from a corner kick mid-way through the second half.

City were forced to wait for their opportunity to grow into the game, following some early Reading pressure and a stoppage in play. However, the chances soon began to slow for Mark Robins' men.

Viktor Gyökeres was the first to find an opening, when he was slipped in on goal, only to be halted by a strong Junior Hoilett challenge.

Jake Bidwell and Ben Sheaf also came close for Coventry. Sheaf watched as the ball sat up nicely for him on the edge of the area, only to fire over the bar, while Bidwell headed wide.

It was Callum O'Hare well-struck effort that got the Sky Blues fans off their seats, however. The young midfielder received the ball on the half-turn and fired a palm-stinging effort at Joe Lumley's goal from outside the area, forcing a strong save.

O'Hare continued to be a thorn in Reading's side throughout the first half, winning two important free kicks just before half-time. The first was curled wide by Gustavo Hamer with the other rifled into the wall by Gyökeres.

City started the second half in dangerous fashion, with defender Michael Rose hitting the woodwork from a Hamer corner. The chance immediately had Reading on the backfoot, allowing Josh Eccles to break clear down the right a play a dangerous ball into the Royals' area, stopped by Lumley.

However, despite their domination, it was Reading who took the lead through Amadou Mbengue when he nodded home from Yakou Meite's header at a corner kick.

Late on, the Sky Blues piled on the pressure in search of a equaliser but, despite introducing Martyn Waghorn and Kasey Palmer from the bench, they were unable to find a late leveller.
