PUSB: 'From The Board' versus Swansea City

18 December 2022

After each matchday programme this season, we publish the regular column from the Coventry City board on our website. You can read Coventry City Chief Executive Dave Boddy's column from our game against Swansea City below:

Good afternoon and welcome to the Coventry Building Society Arena for today’s game in the Sky Bet Championship as we face Swansea City.

I would like to also welcome the players, staff, officials and supporters who join us this afternoon from Swansea.

It is great to be back here at the Coventry Building Society Arena after the World Cup break, and it seems like a very long time since we face Queens Park Rangers on 12th November.

While there has been a break in the playing schedule, it would be safe to say that there has been a lot going on at the Club.

In mid-November, owners SISU announced that they had agreed – subject to EFL approval – to sell a majority stake in the football club to local businessman Doug King, who will take an 85% share in the Football Club. At the time of writing, we are awaiting the EFL’s approval of this agreement, which is imminent.

Shortly after this, Frasers Group purchased the Arena out of administration. The administration of Wasps Group and the Arena companies has been ongoing for a number of weeks now and has caused much uncertainty.

Following the purchase of the Arena by Frasers Group, it was widely reported that we received an eviction notice. We were required by Frasers Group to sign a new licence agreement to enable us to play at the Arena and we have now signed that licence, which runs until May 2023. This represents a positive step forward for the Club and its fans and we now look forward to establishing a constructive working relationship with Frasers Group. We will now commence amicable talks with Frasers Group with a view to agreeing a longer-term licence for the Club to play at the Arena

Around the same time, our retail partner Elite Group went into administration. This was a shock for us and resulted in our Club Shop and online store being closed, as it was for a number of other Clubs who worked with Elite Group. Since then we have been working to get the stock with our Club crest on back to us and the orders that were placed in good faith fulfilled, however this is a very complex and multi-faceted situation, with a number of parties involved. At the time of writing, we are working to do this and also working to identify a new retail partner and kit supplier.

The kits that we have been able to create over the last few years with Hummel have been excellent and kits that wholly represented Coventry City – in both the Club and also the City. This has been a result of the work at Hummel and also our internal ‘Kit Committee’, who work to create and refine ideas and who have an intimate knowledge of the Club and the community. Whoever we work with, we are intent on continuing the fantastic work we have done over the last few years with bespoke and iconic designs.

While these matters are on-going, we thank fans for their patience – sometimes it is not possible to update you immediately or as much as we would like, but we are working to resolve these to the benefit of our Football Club.

Finally, we are pleased to welcome Dean Austin as our new Head of Recruitment. Dean brings with him a wealth of experience in football, having held a number of different roles throughout the game. We look forward to working with him, and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Badlan and Stuart Benthom for their hard work in our recruitment department over the last few years.

Thank you for your support as always – it will be great to see the Sky Blue Army back at the Arena again today and in full force, and I hope you enjoy the game.
