PREVIEW: Sky Blues travel to Reading this weekend

City return to action after World Cup break...

9 December 2022

The Sky Blues return to action for the first time since mid-November, as they travel to the Select Car Leasing Stadium to face Reading.

Meet the Royals:

After a promising start to the season, where they occupied a place in the play-offs, Reading find themselves sat in 13th as they head into this weekend.

Paul Ince leads the Royals for his first full season, after taking over last season and steering them away from the relegation places.

This season, Ince has brought in a host of players, including the returning Tom Ince, Andy Carroll and Shane Long.

From their last six outings, Readin have picked up two wins, three defeats and a draw.

Mark Robins looks ahead to Reading:

“He has a group of players who are very powerful, and they’ve had some at the World Cup, but now they’re back in the fold.

“They’re a threat, they have some good attacking players, they’ve got Andy Carroll, Shane Long, Lucas Joao and they’ve got a lot of experience in the side.

“It’s a difficult game, we always find it tough there. In our first season back in the Championship we lost there and then last season we won, but the game was end-to-end and I expect another tough game.”

Paul Ince's thoughts:

"Robbo’s done a great job there," he said.

"He’s probably the longest-serving manager in the Championship, which is a credit to the owners, allowing the manager time to build what he wants to build. With all the politics going on behind the scenes, with the stadium, it’s been tough for him and the fans, so to see them play well is great.

"He’s always played good football. They had so many games cancelled, and they were on eight points you’d think they might struggle, but all of a sudden, they win four out of five and they’re up there. They’re a good team and it will be a tough game for us."

Head-to-Head record:

Sky Blues wins: 21
Draws: 17
Reading wins: 28

Reading's last six:

Hull City 1-2 Reading (W)
Watford 2-0 Reading (L)
Reading 1-2 Preston North End (L)
Luton Town 0-0 Reading (D)
Burnley 2-1 Reading (L)

Match officials:

Matthew Donohue will be the man in the middle of City's trip to the Select Car Leasing Stadium this weekend.

Donohue, from Greater Manchester, last took charge of a Sky Blues fixture, back in April when he was the man in the middle for City's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

So far this season, Donohue has taken charge of 14 fixtures across the Championship, League One and League Two, awarding 45 yellow cards and no red cards.
