3 December 2022

Sky Blues U18s will kick-start their FA Youth Cup campaign by welcoming youngsters from Premier League side Southampton to Leamington FC's Your Co-Op Community Stadium.

City (winners of the 1987 FA Youth Cup) will lock horns with the Saints (2005 FA Youth Cup runners-up) in a challenging third round fixture in the Midlands.

Southampton boast a Category 1 academy set up, who play their football in the Under-18s Premier League against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea. They currently sit 11th in its Southern category.

The young Sky Blues, meanwhile, play in the Under-18s Professional Development League and are currently 9th in its Northern section.

The third round of the FA Youth Cup will see 64 teams whittled down to 32, with some of the competition's biggest clubs entering at this stage, just as they do in the men's FA Cup.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm with live match updates available on the club's social media channels.

Eric Odhiambo looks ahead to FA Youth Cup action:

Looking ahead to Saturday afternoon's fixture, Sky Blues youth coach Eric Odhiambo said: "We're trying not to hype it up too much but it is hard for the players not to get a little bit carried away.

"That's part of the game and these youngsters need to get used to these occasions as they look to further their careers.

"Southampton are a good team; They have good players, some of who are internationals. However, on the day, it is about who runs hard and who competes. We can only control what we do and, hopefully, that is putting a good performance together.

"I am hoping that we can have a long FA Youth Cup run this season and that we will have plenty of these games to enjoy - but this is the one that is here, right now and they will be going out to perform."
