NEWS: Gary Mills appointed Lead Professional Development Phase Coach

23 December 2022

We are please to confirm that Gary Mills has been appointed the Sky Blues Lead Professional Development Phase Coach.

Mills will lead the Under-18s coaching programme, with Eric Odhiambo assisting him in his duties moving forward.

The 41-year-old joins City from Milton Keynes Dons to head up the Under-18s coaching at Coventry, as he looks to develop the up and coming youngsters within the football club.

Gary’s arrival at Coventry is more of a return to the Academy, after he was part of the youth system as a footballer aged 15.

Mills left the Sky Blues and then went on to carve a successful career for himself in the game, playing for the likes of Rushden & Diamonds, Mansfield, Stevenage and Lincoln.

He then went on to take coaching roles at Wrexham, King's Lynn, Northampton Town and MK Dons, before departing the latter to join the Sky Blues.

Upon his arrival, Mills had this to say:

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Mills said.

“I would like to place on record how excited I am to work with the players and Eric and the coaching staff here and how honoured I am.

“I would also like to thank Dan Bolas and the interview panel for picking me and hopefully I can play a part in the players development.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to step up to the 18s role. I was doing something similar at MK Dons, but it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to.

“It’s a great football club and I can’t wait to play my part.

“I came in last week to meet the staff and the players, so it gave me the opportunity to start making connections and start understanding the players individually and collectively.

“The players are currently on a break for Christmas, and they’ve been given a programme to work on whilst they’re away and when they come back, we will be looking to hit the ground running after the New Year.”

Gary’s first game in charge of the Under-18s will come against Wigan Athletic on the 7th January at the Alan Higgs Centre.
