The striker scored his 11th goal of the season...

21 December 2022

Viktor Gyokeres scored a late winner to secure all three points against West Bromwich Albion at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The game looked to be finishing square, but a late Sky Blues spot-kick made the difference as Gyokeres struck his 11th goal of the season.

The win helps City climb to 8th in the Championship heading into Christmas, as well as Viktor sitting top of the scoring charts.

Speaking after the final whistle, Gyökeres spoke about the victory over West Brom and his goalscoring exploits this season.

Reflecting on the game…

“We played very well today.

We didn’t manage to score in the game with the chances we had, but luckily at the end, we got another chance and we scored.

"It was a game that we were supposed to play earlier in the season, so it is very important to catch up and claim the three points.”

On his run for the penalty…

“I went inside the defender, then somebody got a touch on the ball but it fell to me and I tried getting past him and luckily he took my legs.”

Why Jake Bidwell was holding the ball before the penalty…

“He was holding it in case the West Brom players try to get up against me and talk a little bit.

I tried to wait until people went away from the penalty spot and then why I try to wait until it is just me, the ball and the goalkeeper.”

On players scuffing up the penalty spot…

“Its part of the game, I think and you can do that in my opinion it's trying to stop people scoring. I don’t mind it.”

On being eighth in the table…

“We aim for the play-offs.

"This is what we are doing, we just want to win as many games as possible and it was a difficult start to the season, catching up with fixtures and not playing regularly.

"We will keep going and the team will get better. We want to continue to win as many games as possible and stay up the table.”

On the clean sheets:

“It’s very important when we play good teams like today.

"Obviously, it’s going to be tight and if you keep clean sheets then you have a higher chance of winning.”

On being the Championship top scorer:

“No I’m not surprised. I feel good. I have played a lot this season and the team keep getting better and better.”
