INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on defeat at Reading

The Sky Blues fell to defeat at the Select Car Leasing Stadium...

10 December 2022

Mark Robins has admitted he is disappointed not to have seen his Sky Blues side depart the Select Car Leasing Stadium empty handed after a dominant display against Reading.

City created plenty of chances in Berkshire but were forced to head back up the M40 defeated, with the Royals winning out 1-0.

Michael Rose and Callum O'Hare both came close to finding the net before Amadou Mbengue's nodded home the game's only goal.

Here is what Robins said as he spoke to the media at full time.

On the result and the performance...

"I think that performance, on any other day, could have got us the three points, certainly a point. I thought it was harsh on us not to get something from it.

"I thought that we were playing really well and we conceded against the run of play, the first set-piece goal we have conceded this season.

"The sharpness was lacking in the final third, but I thought we were really good, aside from creating too many good opportunities, and when we did we either snatched at it or it fell to their goalkeeper.

"But we also hit the post and came close a few times. It was just that last little bit that we were looking for."

On the players getting the chance to get back on the field after the World Cup break...

"It's good that we've got some minutes in the legs of the players at this early stage but it was disappointing that we did not get something today, as there were some really good performances.

"We've not had the time to get sharp. We did not have the players fit because of the 12-game block over six weeks.

"Hopefully, this game has acted as a catalyst but today could have gone either way. It's just a shame we didn't get something from it."

On Ben Wilson's save and City's dominance...

"It was a good save from Ben. They did not cause us any major problems because we defended brilliantly, and we passed the ball well.

"They sat in a lower block and blocked things up for us and it was just that final bit that we did not get.

"Callum had a few touched but not enough, and when we did get through their goalkeeper made some really good saves."

On Michael Rose hitting the post...

"That would have changed the game as we were in the ascendency. It was only that one corner they got that ended up in the back of the net.

"We defended the majority of it really well, with a younger team. We are really happy to get that game under our belt."

On finally returning to action after the break...

"This has been the longest month of our lives but I think, if you ask the majority of the players, they needed a breather, at all clubs.

"Nobody thinks about the players and you see them getting injured. It's really difficult.

"What we have done is 100% right for us, even if it's not right for the situation. From this performance, I can be relatively pleased. There's more to come."
