Sky Blues U21s have fallen to their first defeat of the season, against an in-form Charlton Athletic side.

John Dempster's players were, for large periods, the better side at Princes Park but were unable to twice come from behind to avoid an away defeat against the Addicks.

Danny Cashman was on target for City, scoring his third goal in two games, and almost fired home a second with a cunning effort from range.

Charlton took the lead after just 11 minutes with Ryan Huke firing beyond Tom Billson from close range after some good work from his colleagues.

However, it didn’t take the Sky Blues long to reply with Cashman winning the ball high and directing a hard-hit finish beyond Addicks stopper Ahmed Kone.

Tom Costello, playing alongside Cashman in attack, was gifted the chance to put City ahead moments later when Tayo Adaramola slid the summer signing in on goal - but he dragged his effort wide.

Ryan Howley and Will Bapaga also both saw chances fly wide of the target before the home side retook the lead through winger Sahid Kamara on the half-hour mark.

Cashman, who scored twice against Reading on the opening day of the season, almost found the net for a second time just before the break when his curling effort from 25-yards skimmed the woodwork.

At the break, and with his side behind, John Dempster made a change with Harrison Nee, who proved a thorn in Charlton’s side during the second half, replacing Jack Burroughs. Ricardo Dinanga was also introduced during the second half, replacing Costello.

During the bulk of the second half action, City held control of the game with Danny Cashman twice coming close to drawing the Sky Blues level, on one occasion hitting the woodwork with Kone caught outside his area.

But Dempster’s young players were unable to prevent defeat, against a Charlton side who have now won all four of their early-season fixtures.
